Palmerston North Rifle Volunteers Funeral Procession
- Description
This photograph was taken at the corner of Main Street East (far right) and Fitzroy Street (left) on the way to the Terrace End cemetery. The funeral must have been that of a member of the Rifle Volunteers or Mounted Rifles because member of both of these Corps are present. The coffin has been placed on a vehicle drawn by four horses. The edge of the large metal pit (now Memorial Park) can be seen on the far left. The man on foot closest to the camera is Captain Harry Thomas Palmer who served in the Manawatu Mounted Rifles. He died of pneumonia in 1915 at sea. Before the war, he was the auctioneer at the eponymous Harry Palmer and Co Auction Mart.
