Local historians weekly "Back Issues" article in the Manawatū Standard. Significance of Madge Allsop, born Marjorie Kiri McWhirter. Madge (played by actor Patricia Emily Perry) was a fictitious character invented by Australian satirist Barry Humphries in the 1980s. She acted as the long-time companion and former bridesmaid of his comedy charcter Dame Edna Everage. Madge was reported to have come from Palmerston North. In 1994 the Madge character was invited to return to the city for a promotional tour.
