This image was taken (but not used) for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on Monday 6th August 1984. "Record for England in local race." Nearly 800 competitors took part in the Manawatu Lion Brown half-marathon in 1984, with nine runners beating the previous years winning time.
"Masterton's Dianne Taylor retained the women's crown by covering the 21.1k course in 1h 21m 48s. It was outside her winning time of 1h 20m 6s from last year." Second place was claimed by Bernadette Portenski (Scottish Harriers).
"A race record was set by promising Palmerston North runner Charles England in taking out the Manawatu Lion Brown half-marathon yesterday. The 21 year old Massey Student, who runs out of the Palmerston North Boys' High School Club, covered the distance in 1h 7m 36s - well inside the 1h 12m 6s set by last year's inaugural winner Hemi Magill."
Other leading runners included James Girvin (Wainuiomata), Patrick Ashkettle (Victoria University), Howard Gregory (Masterton), Terry Manners (Hawke's Bay Presbyterian), Peter Handcock (Palmerston North) Patrick Graham (Kia Toa) and Keith Lawrence (Hawera).
