Local historians weekly "Back Issues" article in the Manawatū Standard. The Manawatū Racing Club will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2030. Horse racing and attending the races have been a popular leisure activities in Palmerston North since the inaugral race meeting on Boxing Day 1881. The city and businesses have benefitted significantly from the racing industry since its earliest days.
