Napier Road Tree Removal
- Description
-
These images were taken for the August 6th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published.
The caption read: “A feature of Palmerston North since the turn of the century the avenue of trees in Napier Road- subsided under the attack of chainsaws last week. The work was undertaken by the Palmerston North City Council and is to make way for extensions to Main St East. However, the council is at pains to tell the public that it's not cutting the trees down simply for expediency, nor is the ground going to be left bare and windswept. And the elms and silver birch trees were approaching the end of their natural life in any case - some of the trees were dying even before the chainsaws finished them off. Other trees, possibly Golden Elms, are being planted by the council. Those trees together with the new road, are expected to improve the eastern approach to the city. Work on the roadway reconstruction is due to start soon and should cost around $137,000. It should be finished in five or six months.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
