The Manawatū Branch of New Zealand Federation of University Women celebrated Suffrage Year (1993) with a series of 'Her Stories' of senior members.

Joy Bewley (b. 1916) was the first woman in New Zealand with a Geography degree and a teacher's certificate. She had a varied career, mainly related to her interest in geography. She married Norm Bewley in 1949, and they moved to Palmerston North in 1967. Joy was a long time member of NZFUW, joining in 1945.
