This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 15 November 1978 “Inflation No. 1 foe, Muldoon tells city”. Prime Minister Muldoon interrupted his election campaign to open the National Mutual Life Association centre, addressing an audience of 150 invited guests. Muldoon described the building as a “…handsome monument to progress.” In a speech delivered after the unveiling of a plaque, Muldoon stated that if re-elected the National government would fight against rising prices, warning that “…a continuation of inflation would destroy the economy.” He further urged people to view Superannuation as something for everyone, not just those aged 60 and over “…because young people know that, at the age of 60, they would have a basic minimum income.”
