The Opui Mill was owned by the Opui Fibre Co Ltd, whose principal shareholders’ were Hugh and Arthur Akers along with Herman Louis Seifert. The Mill was situated near the Opui Lagoon, about six miles downstream from the Suspension Bridge at Opiki. The Mill was constructed in 1916 and closed down in the winter of 1918. It did not reopen due to the prevalence of the “yellow-leaf” disease amongst the flax, and so the entire Mill Plant was sold by public auction in 1919.
