- Description
-
These images were taken for the April 30th, 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption “Demonstrating students on the march for better bursaries”
An excerpt from the article read: “New Zealand has become a jungle where only the tigers eat "and the rest get eaten", Public Service Association representative, Mr Alan Millar, told a demonstration of students in Palmerston North on Wednesday. The students, numbering about 200, had marched from Massey University to the clocktower in Palmerston North in protest at the Government’s lack of action in increasing the standard tertiary bursary. Their action was part of a nationwide protest by tertiary students on Wednesday.”
…
“The demonstration was also addressed by Mr Peter Edmonds, Social Credit's candidate for Palmerston North; Mr G. Serrallach, Values Party candidate for the Palmerston North seat; and Dr Pauline Penny, from the Labour Party. No representatives from the National Party attended, despite being invited. Apologies were received from National's MP for Palmerston North, Mr J. Lithgow, the party's candidate for Manawatu, Mr Michael Cox. and Labour's candidates for Manawatu and Palmerston North, Mr T. de Cleene and Mr J. Walding.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
