These images were taken for the September 3rd 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published with the caption: “Palmerston North's contingent in the Motogard rally, with their cars in the background: Front row, from left: Alan Curtis, Warren Hislop, Cam Taylor, Graham Bennett. Back row: Peter Jarrett, Vallis Peet, Brian Green, Robert Orr.”
An excerpt from the article read: “Palmerston North rally fans will be watching the Motogard rally, which began in Auckland yesterday, with great interest. There are four Palmerston North cars, and crews, entered in the event. And tomorrow Palmerstonians can see how the rally field, and the local cars are faring.”
“For those who want to get up early, the first cars will start arriving in the city about 5.30 a.m. after two days and nights of torrid motoring from Auckland. They'll be coming to the city along the main highway from Wanganui, and will be arriving for a refuelling stop at Tim Gibbes Motors, Taonui St. starting around 5.30 a.m. The last vehicle should get to the refuelling point about 7 am bv which time most of the other vehicles will be esconced [sic] in the ‘Parc Ferme’ at the Showgrounds. The cars will be in the Akers Pavilion, and open for public inspection from 11 a.m. until the later afternoon. The only public entry will be through the showgrounds’ Pascal St entrance. At 4.30 p.m. the first of the cars will be away on division three, the final stage of the rally, which will take them to Wellington.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
