Description

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 23rd February 1963. "The Lions Club of Palmerston North, in conjunction with Lions International, is at present holding its campaign for the collection of old, unwanted spectacles. This is to assist in the worldwide Sight Conservation Appeal. Up to this morning, well over 1000 pairs of old spectacles had been donated. Glasses of every possible description, some dating back many years, pinc-nez, lorgnettes and monacles, were included. It is hoped that well over 5000 pairs will eventually come to hand. Even deaf aids have been collected. A novel system of collection has been devised. Local milk vendors have offered their services and are collecting the old spectacles when delivering milk. When the appeal has concluded the spectacles will be graded and dispatched to one of the sight conservation clinics manned by Lions Club members in India."
