Description

View from the top of the old Public Library building (now the Square Centre), this photograph looks towards Main Street West and overlooks the Lion's Den and playground. The playground was erected by the Leo Club in 1971 and removed in 1974 due to continued vandalism. It was relocated to other city parks. The Lion's Den was removed in the mid-2000s as part of an initiative to make The Square more safe. To the left is the Hopwood Clock Tower. Note that it has neither the single cross or the lantern cross on top. Note that 'Totoranui', which now sits outside Te Manawa Museum, stands on the corner of The Square and Main Street West - where the Palmerston North City Council's Civic Administration Building now stands [2014].
