A race record was set by promising Palmerston North runner Charles England in taking out the Manawatu Lion Brown half-marathon yesterday. The 21 year old Massey Student, who runs out of the Palmerston North Boys' High School Club, covered the distance in 1h 7m 36s - well inside the 1h 12m 6s set by last year's inaugural winner Hemi Magill."
Nearly 800 runners took part in the race, with nine runners beating the previous years winning time.
Other leading runners included James Girvin (Wainuiomata), Patrick Ashkettle (Victoria University), Howard Gregory (Masterton), Terry Manners (Hawke's Bay Presbyterian), Peter Handcock (Palmerston North) Patrick Graham (Kia Toa) and Keith Lawrence (Hawera).
The women's section was won by Dianne Taylor (Masterton) in 1h 21m 48s, just outside her winning time from the previous year. Second place was 26s behind her, claimed by Bernadette Portenski (Scottish Harriers).
