“Basil Rolls His Own Pastels”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the May 14th, 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption “Mr Register at work on another pastel original.”
An excerpt from the article read: “He may be "retired", but today Basil Register, of Palmerston North, is turning out more paintings than ever. His latest exhibition opened for private viewing in Palmerston North today - it will be open to the public from tomorrow (May 15) until May 26. It's being held at Anthony's gallery, in Broadway. Yet even now he’s preparing for an exhibition of his works in Auckland In October. The exhibition is beleived [sic] to be the first time an artist has had a solo showing of pastel landscapes in Auckland without any oil or water colour paintings being included. Basil denies that he's in the position of "churning out" paintings, despite the fact that he has two exhibitions this year in Palmerston North, plus the Auckland showing. And because he's retired from his ordinary work doesn't mean he should take it easy. "I paint because I love it," Basil said. "It comes from in here." (He thumped his chest).”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
