Church Street side of The Square

The second building from right is the Colonial Bank of New Zealand which later became the Borough Council Chambers. Across the Fitzherbert Street (now Avenue) corner can be seen the Occidental Hotel with the clock tower, as yet without clock, on top.

Ashhurst Bridge after flood damage

Sections of the Ashhurst Bridge were swept away in the Easter flood of 1895. Prior to the construction of the new bridge in 1909 a punt, as seen in the photograph, was used for crossing the river.
