The royal couple can be seen on the balcony of the Grand Hotel, The Square, where they stayed overnight. Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Palmerston North on 7 and 8 January 1954, as part of their tour of New Zealand 1953-1954.
