This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 3rd January 1966 "The penny pile being built by a group of volunteers at the Majestic Hotel received a final boost on New Year's Eve. With several donations from well-wishers during the Christmas period, sent to the chairman of the Manawatu Committee for Intellectually Handicapped Children (Mr. K. Williamson, right) he handed to the hotel penny-pile organiser (Mr. C. Sydow, left) a cheque to swell the fund to £425. A further £15 was donated in notes. The final target of £600 is now well in sight, and it is hoped by organisers that the demolition of the pile can be undertaken early in the New Year."
