This photograph of The Square must have been taken between the years 1881 and 1902 because the second Occidental Hotel is visible (on right with clock tower, built 1891) and the original wooden Bank of New Zealand is shown on the left (two storey wooden building, built 1902). It was probably taken from the top of the old Post Office on the corner of Main Street East and The Square. The distinct "quadrant" layout is clear from this image. This photograph has been printed in reverse.
