George Willmot New (1883-1963) began as a jockey at the age of 14 and then turned to training horses. By the 1930s he was the owner of stables on Totara Road, adjacent to the Awapuni racecourse, on part of the original ‘Highden Estate’. He had many successes and retired in 1950.
