Frances Ann Stewart was a daughter of Steven Carkeek, first Commissioner of Customs in New Zealand, and a sister of Morgan and Arthur Carkeek well-known surveyors of the Wellington province. She married John Tiffin Stewart, the surveyor, who surveyed and laid out Palmerston North and Foxton townships.
