The race course was originally situated near the junction of Botanical and Park Road (between the Manawatu River and Wikiriwhi Crescent). In 1903, because of erosion from the river, the race course was moved to its present site at Awapuni. This photograph looks south-eastward and shows the Grandstand on the river side of the racing track. The spectators are evidently watching the horses as they approach the finishing line during the cup race.
