Postcard image of the Manawatu River and Gorge. The road (to the right) was constructed through the Gorge in 1871-1872, and the railway line opened in 1891 on the opposite bank. The photograph was probably taken shortly after the railway line was completed as the scrub is cleared from the hillside.
