Alfred Pennefather was police constable in Ashhurst from April 1895 until 31 March 1896. He was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, in 1840 and married Margaret Charlotte Bateman. Pennefather served in the Otago Provincial Police and the New Zealand Constabulary Force (Field Branch). He transferred to the New Zealand Police, following their formation in 1886. He was variously stationed in Whanganui, Foxton and Hawera before moving to Ashhurst. Pennefather passed away on 24 March 1908, aged 68, in Whanganui.
