“Motor Show Success”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the August 27th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published with the caption: “Vintage vehicles crammed together, with modern cars in the background - just one small part of last weekend's show.”
An excerpt from the article read: “Palmerston North's first motor show of its kind was a great success, says the man who Rhys was mainly responsible for organising it, Mr Mason. The show was organised 'by the Palmerston North Rotoract Club, with the help of Radio 2ZA, and held at the city's showgrounds last weekend. About 90 cars and 60 motorcycles, worth about $1.5 million packed the Akers and Pascal Street pavilions, and about 5,500 people paid to see them last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Gross proceeds from the show were about $5,700. After expenses have been deducted, the proceeds will be divided between the Salvation Army's emergency lodge and the Fishbowl project.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
