Development began on the Victoria Esplanade in Palmerston North, named to mark Queen Victoria's 60th jubilee, in 1897. The pergola in the background was built c 1916-1917 and the band rotunda moved from The Square to the gardens in 1907. Both were later demolished, the pergola in c1940 and the band rotunda in 1966.
