James Hallam was born in Ashton-under-Lyne in Lancashire, in 1869 and died in Shannon in 1951. Around 1900, James Hallam gained his stationary engine driver's license which enabled him to gain employment at Lind and O'Connor's flaxmill. he later moved to Miranui Mill, eventually becoming the accountant until the mill closed.
