Former Mayoress Ellen (Nell) (nee Jolly), wife of William Thomas Wood is seen here with her daughter in law, Ethel May Wood(nee Churchward) who married Herbert Wood. William Wood was a former Mayor and Member of Parliament for Palmerston North. As Mayoress, Mrs Wood played an instrumental part in the development of Palmerston North - collecting subscriptions to start the Palmerston North Hospital, raising funds for the Post Office chimes and town clock and helped toward the establishment of the Old People's Home. She died in 1957, aged 95.
