“Getting Their Point Across”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the September 3rd 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published with the caption: “Dave Miller (left) and association member Lloyd Davies check out the association's poster before displaying it in the library.”
The short article read: “Increasing public interest in the Rationalists Association has resulted in the formation of a display, designed to explain the group's activities, which will be on show in the Palmerston North Library for the next fortnight. The group’s Palmerston North branch secretary, Mr. Dave Miller, says the display will be on show from tomorrow. After the display a collection of books "generally unavailable to the public because of religious censorship" will be displayed for another fortnight.
Besides the display, information sheets about the Rationalists' aims, objects and philosphy [sic] will be available. The aim of all this is to give the public a better idea of the group's activities, he said. "It's designed to increase public awareness of the activities of the association in safeguarding people's basic democratic rights, such as the right to safe, legal abortions and free and secular education," Mr Miller said. And because of "religious censorship" it's usually difficult to get information about philosophic societies like the Rationalists to the public, he added.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
