Packhorse outside a Whare
More Info →- Description
-
This photograph was presumably taken in the Pohangina Valley, probably near Utuwai. The sack around the man’s waist is a flour sack, stamped with the words “Richter Nannestad, Pure Roller Flour, Manawatu, Palmerston North”. In the foreground can be seen a camp-oven, a billy and a cat. Note the construction of the Whare – slab walls and chimney, corrugated iron roof and sack door. This Whare is typical of the kind used by “Bush-whackers”, grass-cutters and other groups of seasonal labourers.
