The group that later formed the Palmerston North branch of the Anglican Church Embroidery Guild commenced meeting informally at St Peter's Church in September 1951. Mrs R L Bennett, who had trained with the Royal School of Needlework and was a member of the Wellington Guild, visited Palmerston North to provide instruction in Church Embroidery. In February 1952 a meeting was held and a resolution passed to formally establish a local branch of the Guild. From 1957, the group was known as the St Peter's Church Embroidery Guild.
