Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, visited Palmerston North 6-7 January 1954, staying overnight at the Grand Hotel. A decorative crown was erected on top of the Band Rotunda, in honour of the visit. Behind the rotunda, the lit up T & G Tower is visible.
