More Info →UFS Building, 284-286 Cuba Street

This building will have been one of the last designed by William Thorrold-Jaggard for the partnership founded by his late father. It was built, at a cost of £17,600, for the United Friendly Societies’ Dispensary, which occupied another building on the same property. The U.F.S Chambers consisted of two shops, with two flats upstairs. A ground floor passage running through this building also led to the society’s other building, which fronts the Square. The U.F.S Chambers housed an after-hours emergency pharmacy, and so it was open at times and on days (i.e. every weekend in those days) when other pharmacies were closed. The urgent pharmacy was relocated elsewhere in about 1982.
