City of Palmerston North Architectural Competition
- Description
The Palmerston North City Council advertised for ideas regarding the placement and design of civic buildings on the old Railway Land adjacent to The Square. This booklet gave guidance for those who wished to make a submission for the competition. From the foreword: "The Palmerston North City Council has decided to redevelop land in the centre of the City left vacant by the relocation of the railway. A town planning study was carried out for the Council by Kingston Reynolds Thom and Allardice, architects, engineers and planners. This study recommended, among other things, that a group of civic buildings should be located on the former railway land adjacent to the Square. This competition is for the design of the civic buildings which will form the first stage of the redevelopment of the City centre. It is the Council's intentions that the civic buildings should be a focal point for the City and realising the architectural importance of this project it has been decided to invite registered architects to submit their proposals in open competition. The Council believes that the challenge presented by this project will attract the interest of many architects and will thus ensure that a group of buildings of the highest architectural merit will enhance our City. D B Black, Mayor, Palmerston North, May 1970".
