This engine came from Baldwin Locomotive works, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA (No. 19797) and entered service 8 May 1902. It was used for passenger services between Paekakariki and Longburn. When the New Zealand Government Railways bought the Wellington Manawatu Railway in 1908, No. 5 became NC 461, and then worked the Wairarapa and Napier lines until being written off in 1931.
