This photograph shows the retrieval of the derailed freight engine KA 951, derailed into the Manawatu Gorge. The accident happened 20 August 1946. Two of the three crewmen were killed - B. Craighead and the fireman, R. Hoskins, while the guard, R Maitland, escaped. Three wagons and the engine fell into the flooded river.Two of the three crewmen were killed in this accident.
