“John Lithgow Quitting P.N.”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the December 17th, 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption: “John Lithgow - back in action.”
An excerpt from the article read: “Palmerston North's irrepressible former MP, John preparing to shake the city's dust from his feet. But before he goes, he's exchanging paperwork for brushwork - he's painting his house and nearby office building in College Street, before selling them. And, as if to underline his hard views on unemployment, he claims (with a laugh) that he's been offered plenty of work painting houses in the area. Mr Lithgow, who lost his Parliamentary Labour's Joe Walding in the November General Election, still maintains there's no such thing as unemployment. "It's your attitude to work," he says.
Mr Lithgow says he and his wife have mutually decided to sell their property in the Palmerston North area and move to Auckland. He hasn't got any job prospects in mind, but says he's keen to get involved in export-orientated industry. These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
