A Carl Johan (or Johann) Oden appears in the Post office Directories from 1890 to at least 1940, he is described as a storekeeper in Kelvin Grove or a farmer of Whakaronga. This is inherently unlikely to have been the same person - possibly father and son. Certainly the son of C. J. Oden shown here was the donor of this photograph, which he has captioned "Dad and Tommy", Tommy being the horse.
