Description

The Coronation Building was the second of Robin Hood’s three neighbouring buildings. The third to be built, the Progress Building (1938) once stood to the left of the Coronation Building. The buildings were considered good examples of how the 1930s Depression affected the ‘Moderne’ design style. The Bauhaus school of design advocated simplicity as the main criterion for beauty of design. The Coronation building, unlike the Progress Building featured windows with rounded upper corners to relieve the austerity of the façade. The only other decoration is provided by simple lines of low relief between the windows. These windows form a greatly diluted variation on the Spanish Mission style that was popular in the 1930s.
