Broadway Chambers, 82 Broadway Avenue
- Description
Broadway Chambers was the first of three neighbouring two-storey buildings in Broadway to be designed by Robin Hood. These buildings were considered good examples of how the 1930s Depression affected the ‘Moderne’ design style. The Bauhaus school of design advocated simplicity as the main criterion for beauty of design and lack of money during the period provided another reason to cut down on embellishments. Broadway Chambers featured windows with rounded upper corners to relieve the austerity of the façade. The only other decoration is provided by simple lines of low relief between the windows. These windows form a greatly diluted variation on the Spanish Mission style that was popular in the 1930s.
