This photograph was taken on Empire Day in 1902. It shows the Foxton Militia vs the Shannon Riflemen (who are in mufti because their uniforms could not be distinguished from the Foxton group, as they were all volunteers). They are thought to be participating in a shooting competition. Identified are: George Stevenson of Shannon, 2nd from left back row; William Davey (son of Sam Davey, Kairanga farmer)), 3rd from left back row; William Shearman of Shannon, 6th from left back row; ? Nye (cousin of William Shearman), 3rd from left front row.
