The work on the second dam, which replaced the first, wooden structure, began in October 1906 (see Evening Standard 1/10/1906, page 4) and the water was turned on in August 1907 (E.S. 3/03/1909, page 5). In 1912, its height was raised to 50 feet, the enlarged dam being officially opened on February 17, 1913. The man in the second from left in the back row is Mr Samuel Jickell, who was the Palmerston North Borough Engineer and on his left is Mr Christian Voss.
