Description

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 27 August 1960 "With the members of the New Zealand Medical Corps who were in camp at the Awapuni Racecourse during the First World War holding a reunion in Palmerston North this weekend much interest will centre in these photographs taken while units of the corps were at Awapuni and overseas. The members were at Awapuni from September 23, 1915, to January 31, 1916. In this photo, taken when going up to the Somme, shows (from the left): Back row, Captain Grant, Captain Simpson, Captain Harvey, Lieutenant Finlayson, Captain Venables; front row, Major Guthrie, Lieut.-Colonel Hardie Nell and Major A.A. Martin. The last-named, who was a well known member of the medical profession in Palmerston North before going overseas, died of wounds during the Battle of the Somme when treating wounded soldiers close to the firing line."
