Letter from the Palmerston North RSA, regarding concerns over the siting the Clock Tower in The Square
- Description
In 1953 Arthur Hopwood gifted the city of Palmerston North £10,000 to build a Clock Tower in The Square to hold the clock and chimes removed from the Post Office after the 1942 earthquake. The Returned Services' Association wrote to the Mayor expressing concern at the choice of the 'band rotunda' site for the erection of the Clock Tower, due to its close proximity to the War Memorial. The Clock Tower was completed in 1957, on the contested site.
