Description

L.G. West & Son designed this“brick garage”. This building’s permit was issued in April 1913 to Frances Martha Knight. Mrs Knight had already built “motor sheds” on this property in July 1906. Subsequent occupants included: Manawatu Motor Engineering Works, Len Pierard’s Broadway Motors Ltd., John Chambers & Son Ltd. and Brill & Morgan Ltd. Early newspaper reports emphasise this building’s fireproof doors when referring to the inflammable materials held there. In 1924, then occupant, Broadway Motors, opened up the entire length of the property to Broadway, to permit undercover parking to visitors to town, in addition to the usual garage work. More recently it has been an internet and gaming café, and housed the Shepherd’s Rest Trust. In 2014, this building was closed and under threat as earthquake-prone. Now it is Brew Union, accessed from Broadway Avenue.
