Description

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 13th January 1966, captioned: "World champion Tamara Press and other Russian athletes arrived at Milson airport this morning for a brief visit to the city. They were met by the public relations officer (Mr. P. Brunton) and two residents of the city who were to act as interpreters. They are seen on their arrival. Later in the day they were taken for a tour of the city and surrounding district."

The two female athletes are Tamara Press (fifth from the left) and her sister Irina Press (seventh from left). The Press sisters set 26 world records between 1959 and 1966.

The man second from left is Michael Kopytko, who was one of the interpreters. The bearded man (sixth from left) is believed to be George Lavrentiev, the other interpreter.
