The caption reads, "Working on the Manawatu Gorge", but there is some doubt as to whether this is a correct identification. The road is clearly being constructed through soil, whereas the Gorge road is hewn from rock. The slope of the land is also to gentle for that of the Gorge. The original print is mounted in an identical fashion to several photographs of farmhouses from Beaconsfield, so this photograph may also have been taken in that vicinity.
