Peter Bares (Panayioti Ververis) was born in Greece and emigrated to New Zealand in 1930. His wife Maria (nee Vounatsos) came to New Zealand from Greece in 1939, to marry Peter. They had three children, Mercina, John and Jim. Originally living in Wellington they moved to Palmerston North in 1945 when they bought the Royale Dutch luncheon and tearooms, which they ran until selling it in 1957-1958. The photograph shows the family outside the Royale Dutch at 170 Broadway, Palmerston North. Further information can be found on the Bares family and businesses at IMCA A175/381-R.
