“Very important in fabrics.” Fabric department set slightly apart from main PDC building [had been Club Hotel see above]. Had its own tea room. At end of day a “male member of staff” came over to collect the cash.
2.20:
Theft: Most losses in Fabrics were from the remnants counter. There was a store detective who Norma thinks worked for an agency. Biggest losses storewide were from the Fashion dept. Examples of theft. Shops in town helped one another with descriptions of suspects. For staff to apprehend shoplifters, they could only act when thief had left the shop. Norma was more comfortable intervening before goods stolen by letting thief know that you’d spotted them.
