It was reported in the Manawatu Standard that Local Government Minister, Graham Bassett, commented that Sir Joseph Wards could not have started the town clock originally in 1906, as the clock tower plaque stated. Ian Matheson, City Archivist, 'solved the mystery'. The clock was started by Mrs W T Wood, wife of the Palmerston North Member of Parliament at the time, 9 November 1906. The plaque has since been amended to record this.
