Freyberg High School

This blazer pocket features the Freyberg High School Crest embroidered on a navy blue background. The castle indicates a solid foundation, with the Union Jack signifying British influence in the education system. The lion rampant embodies bravery and courage. The four stars on a diagonal black band represent the bandolier of a soldier. However, the Eagle rousant is missing from the top of the crest. Foundation staff devised the school motto, "Virtute et Honore," early in 1955 when Latin was taught at the school. Those foundation staff provided a brief translation of, "with Courage and with Honour," to stand for the wider concept of 'virtus' which epitomises the best qualities of man. The pocket belonged to Ms Jillian (Jill) Farrington, who attended Freyberg High School from 1968 to 1971.

Bernard Freyberg,  Deputy Constable and Lieutenant Governor of Windsor Castle, replies to a letter from Freyberg High School Principal, Mr H. H.  Craig, in his Christmas correspondence. Sir Freyberg discusses a potential Assembly Hall and a request for a copy of his portrait - in regards to "our school."  

Bernard Freyberg,  Deputy Constable and Lieutenant Governor of Windsor Castle, replies to a letter from Freyberg High School Principal, Mr H. H.  Craig. First he comments on news from Freyberg High School, named in his honour. Sir Freyberg then goes on to write about that great kiwi pass-time, sport, the Queen Mother's February visit to Palmerston North, and Mr Craig's imminent visit to London.

Freyberg High School was officially opened by Dr C. E. Beeby, The Director of Education. He is photographed addressing guests attending the ceremony, with the official party seated behind. This is the first report template from Freyberg High School, dated 1955. The printers mark reads, "(SIMON)," and it is on lined paper. There are twenty-five subjects listed, with teachers recording the student's: marks percentage, class average, number of students in the class, and individual placement within this range. Attendance was noted and remarks made by the subject and form teachers. Finally the report was signed by the student's parent(s) and school principal.
